NOTES: Jails are at ground zero of the epidemic. More than 30% of people incarcerated in jails suffer from serious opioid withdrawal and often have little to no control over opioid use. Individuals are brought in directly from the street, often actively under the influence of opioids and/or actively withdrawing from opioid use. Left untreated, there are risks to the patient's safety, risks to facility staff due to the potential for a critical incident, and potential liability for the facility.

Integrating special populations such as family and retirees, trends in wellness, and agency examples will be discussed.
NOTES: Placement of law enforcement-based victim services within the agency—on the organizational chart and in physical workspaces—has a direct impact on practical implementation, incorporation, and sustainability. Selection of the direct supervisor is a key component of this placement, which has a cascading effect on services to victims and co-victims, operational decisions, and planning for VSU expansion.

NOTES: Do you want to work in a place where you feel safe? At work, and in life, we should be able to live our lives where it is safe to take risks, to fail, to NOT be ok, and be able to ask for the help that we need it. To be able to voice concerns, question processes, and ideas. Sadly, too many places are stuck in the status quo. Everyone in an organization can create a safe environment through thoughtful, deliberate action.

NOTES: Rights for victims and co-victims of crime have been formalized in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the federal government. These rights are available throughout multiple stages of the justice system, but the obligation to ensure access to those rights starts when crimes are reported to law enforcement agencies.
NOTES: The topic of secondary/vicarious trauma and burnout has been discussed to death at this point for most people. Most professionals don’t need another “self-care” talk or another discussion of how burned out they are. Everyone has been through the thresher. At this point, self-care isn’t something you need to learn; it’s something you need to remember, something that all the hits and all the losses you experience each day make you forget.
NOTES: Strong relationships and collaboration between advocates and law enforcement agencies enhance victim’s access to information and support, increase community trust in the criminal justice system, and ultimately help build safer communities. In this webinar, we will explore the benefits of these partnerships and strategies to develop and sustain relationships between law enforcement and victim service providers.
CATEGORIES: Corrections, Leadership, Mental Health
NOTES: This interactive session will focus on the importance of collaborative leadership among custody command staff and medical & mental health administrators. It’s critical that all levels of a correctional facility’s operation work together to ensure the best care, custody, and control are provided to incarcerated individuals. Poor communication, a lack of collaboration, and conflict ultimately lead to poor safety, critical incidents, and adverse outcomes that lead to liability.

NOTES: Have you ever spent your entire day making all types of decisions and then can’t decide where you are going to go to eat because it’s just too much? In today’s world, most people are at this point, but few know why. Decisions add to the physical, mental, and emotional loads that we carry. CATEGORIES: Domestic Violence, Mental Health, Other
NOTES: Those who experience crime are not a monolith, and many victims of crime can experience multiple types of victimization. A one-size-fits-all approach leaves many victims, especially those experiencing intimate-partner violence, without the services and support they need. Service providers need to understand poly-victimization and how it impacts survivors’ experiences with the programs at all levels and work to find the right resources and support mechanisms to serve victims best.
NOTES: “Self-Care” had a promising start when introduced to the field. At its best, it attempted to acknowledge that the job is hard and we need to honor ourselves. Unfortunately, it has now devolved into a concept that, at best, is unattainable, and, at worst, makes you feel worse (the exact opposite of what self-care is supposed to do). This webinar will discuss concrete alternatives to “self-care” and address reasons why it can be a high-risk strategy for providers in the field.
NOTES: Every day, our brains play a soundtrack. At times, it’s our favorite jam, while other times, it can be nothing but a cycle of shame and insecurity. Many factors play into the soundtrack: relationships, mental health, ADHD, a lack of confidence at work, and more. The real question is, if we know these negative soundtracks will play, how can we hit the “Next” button before they cause us to spiral? During this session, we’ll dive into the soundtracks we play in our heads.
