About Dr. Lauryn DeGreeff

Lauryn E. DeGreeff is an Associate Professor of Chemistry with the International Forensic Research Institute at Florida International University in Miami, FL. She conducts research in the field of vapor or odor analysis as it relates canine and instrumental detection, specifically trace vapor sampling, characterization, and generalization. Dr. DeGreeff graduated from FIU with a Ph.D. in Forensic Chemistry in 2010. Prior to returning to FIU in 2021 as a professor, she conducted a fellowship at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Counterterrorism and Forensic Science Research Unit. After, she spent ten years as a researcher and principal investigator in the Chemistry Division at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC. During her time at the Naval Research Laboratory, she earned a number of awards including the Federal Laboratory Consortium Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer, the U.S. Navy Civilian Service Award and recognition as one of the Top 30 Influential Woman Role Models by the American Society of Naval Engineers. Since returning to FIU, she has mentored 13 Ph.D. students and numerous undergraduate researchers and was awarded the FIU CASE Awards for both Research and for Engagement.
Dr. DeGreeff regularly lectures on the dynamics of odor for the operational canine detection community and at national and international scientific conferences. She has also authored many peer-reviewed manuscripts, holds four pending and completed patents, and is the editor of the book entitled Canines: The Original Biosensor, released in 2022.
