About Jim Walsh

Instructor Walsh began his law enforcement career in 2001 in Washington, DC working patrol operations for the United States Park Police and getting firsthand exposure to policing in an urban environment. In 2008 Walsh was hired by the Montgomery County, Maryland Department of Police (MCPD), a large department with 1200 sworn officers servicing over a million citizens just north of Washington, DC.

After being hired by MCPD, Walsh quickly moved from patrol operations to MCPD Special Investigations Division (SID) Drug Enforcement Section in 2011 working as a narcotics detective. Walsh remains working as a narcotics detective presently and has been federally deputized as a task force officer since 2014. Walsh has observed approximately a thousand street level drug transactions made in public and has become extremely proficient in identifying behavioral traits as well as characteristics typically associated with individuals conducting street level drug transactions.

Over the past 12 years Walsh has worked investigating and dismantling complex interstate as well as international drug trafficking organizations (DTOs). These investigations began in Maryland but then spanned nationwide and internationally into China, Mexico, and the Philippines. These investigations have led to the seizure of hundreds of pounds of methamphetamine, kilograms of fentanyl, cocaine, heroin, numerous firearms, and thousands of counterfeit Percocet/fentanyl pills. Walsh has authored numerous federal and state Title III wiretaps in support of drug trafficking and murder investigations. These wiretaps have resulted in large scale federal indictments and convictions. This includes a six-year investigation which dismantled a gang organization based in Baltimore City which was a drug source of supply for a huge customer base serving the Mid-Atlantic states, used violence and murder in the course of business operations, and whose leadership were ultimately convicted under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). Walsh is grateful to have been involved in these cases and is passionate about sharing the many lessons learned during these investigations to fellow law enforcement officers.
