Description

This course provides law enforcement officers with a comprehensive understanding of the constitutional principles and legal standards governing motor vehicle stops and vehicle searches. Officers will examine the Fourth Amendment framework that applies to traffic enforcement, including reasonable suspicion, probable cause, and the legal justification required to stop and detain drivers and passengers.

Through case law analysis and practical examples, the course covers lawful vehicle stops, passenger issues, consent searches, probable cause vehicle searches, the automobile exception, protective sweeps, K-9 deployments, and the scope and duration of traffic stops. Officers will also review common mistakes that lead to suppression of evidence and civil liability.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to clearly articulate the legal basis for vehicle stops and searches, properly document their actions, and conduct roadside investigations that comply with constitutional requirements and current court decisions.

This training is designed to help officers strengthen roadside enforcement skills while protecting evidence, cases, and agencies from legal challenges.
