Course Overview:
Participants will learn the fundamentals of cryptocurrency, recognize its role in modern criminal activity, identify common wallet types, transaction methods and hardware wallets. Attendees will learn to identify red flags related to cryptocurrency transactions and activity, know when and how to escalate request for investigative assistance, and recognize the importance of rapid investigative response in crypto cases. This is an interactive lecture with opportunities for questions and discussion throughout the course.
Prerequisites: None. No prior cryptocurrency knowledge required.
Session Topics:
- Introduction to cryptocurrency, what is it, how it works, and who controls it.
- Crypto and Criminals, understanding the threat landscape and exploring why criminals use crypto.
- How to identify crypto artifacts including transaction basics, platforms, apps and hardware wallet identification.
- Examine methods of crypto tracing and understand what’s visible and were to focus during an investigation.
- Discussion on and off ramps, learn how criminals move between cash and crypto.
- Review real case examples of how crypto was used to attribute suspects. Walk through the entire workflow.
