Description

This 8-hour course is designed for all first responders to increase awareness of mental health concerns, including Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) associated with working in law enforcement and other emergency fields. It helps students understand common causes, dangers, and behaviors to watch for in the general public, themselves, their loved ones, and their peers. Students learn proven tools and techniques to recognize mental health concerns in themselves, understand the importance of self-care, and develop coping skills. They also learn potential resources and how and when to ask for help.

Students will learn:

• To recognize signs and symptoms of TBIs, PTSD, and other mental health concerns
• To distinguish the kinds of behaviors first responders may observe in others
• To understand how these can co-occur with other disorders such as substance abuse, depression, and anxiety
• To identify the most common psychotropic medications and ways to determine whether someone might not be taking their medication
• To determine coping strategies and how and where to seek help if needed
• The importance of self-care and asking for help before it’s too late
