Description

This course provides law enforcement officers with practical guidance on applying criminal law during real-world patrol operations. Officers regularly encounter situations requiring rapid legal assessment and decision-making. Understanding how criminal statutes translate into street-level enforcement is essential for effective policing and constitutional compliance.

The course examines the most common criminal violations officers face in daily patrol duties, including offenses such as assault, theft, burglary, drug offenses, disorderly conduct, weapons violations, and domestic violence. Participants will learn how to identify the legal elements of these offenses, recognize probable cause, and properly articulate observations in reports and testimony.

Through scenario-based discussion and case examples, officers will explore how criminal law is applied in evolving situations such as traffic stops, disturbance calls, suspicious person investigations, when a person refuses to identify themselves and warrantless arrests. Emphasis is placed on recognizing criminal conduct, determining appropriate charges, preserving evidence, and avoiding common legal mistakes that can undermine prosecutions.

By the end of the course, officers will have a stronger understanding of how criminal statutes operate in the field and how to confidently apply the law to the common violations they encounter during patrol.
